Learner drivers must sit and pass the Theory Test (including Hazard Perception) before they can apply for the Practical Driving Test.

This test is in two parts with up to a 3-minute break between each part. The first part is the theory questions consisting of 50 multiple choice questions and candidates must get 43 answers correct to pass. The time limit for this section is 57 minutes although candidates with learning difficulties can have extra time as long as this is arranged at the time of booking. Candidates can request a voiceover facility using headphones where the questions are read out. The questions can also be presented in 20 other languages, as long as this is specified when booking the test.

Hazard Perception
You will also need to practice for the Hazard Perception test. The DVD The Official DSA Guide to Hazard Perception is available via the link below or at many bookshops.

The Official DSA Guide to Hazard Perception (28 Sep 2007)

The Hazard Perception Test consists of 14 video clips on a personal computer. These show everyday driving situations where the candidate must identify developing hazards as they arise by clicking the mouse button. Candidates must score 44 out of a possible 75.

To pass the Theory Test you must pass both parts, otherwise the entire test must be taken again.

After you take the test, you will get your results within a few minutes. Your printed results will also contain a Pass Certificate with a number, unique to your test which must be quoted when booking your practical driving test. Do not lose this as you will need to produce it when taking your practical driving test.

The Practical Driving Test
To book a practical driving test, have your theory pass certificate number, your provisional licence, and a credit or debit card.

It is recommended that your test is taken in the driving school car since you will be familiar with it and most of your driving experience will have been in this car. This will be a 2-hour session, which includes a 1-hour lesson followed by your practical test.

The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. To pass, you must have 15 or less driving faults. If you have one serious or one dangerous fault, you will fail the test.

At the beginning of the test, you will be required to read a number plate at a certain distance. After this eyesight test, you will be asked two vehicle safety check questions. You will then be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The reversing exercises can be two of the following: reversing round a corner, turning in the road, reverse parking (parallel parking), or bay parking. You may also be asked to carry out a controlled stop exercise.

At the end of the test you will be told if you have been successful and given feedback on any points that the examiner feels that you could improve on.
