What do I need to start?
Before starting driving lessons, new drivers must obtain a provisional driving licence.
Complete Form D1 – Application For a Driving Licence, which is available from most Post Offices or order online.
Who are our new drivers?
Teenagers: The majority of new pupils are 17-year-olds and many are still at school.
20 +: A growing number of pupils are in their mid-20s. Still at university or recently finished, they now realise the benefits of a driving licence for career development.
Older pupils: Don’t use your age as an excuse! You’re never too old to learn to drive! One of our recent pupils was a sprightly 86- year-old taking a few refresher lessons.
Tell me about a driving lesson.
All lessons are conducted on a 1-to-1 basis and there will only be one pupil in the car at any one time. Lessons can start and finish at any reasonable place within the normal tuition area and this can be from home, school, or place of work.
Length of lesson: Two-hour lessons are recommended, are much more productive and you should reach test standard in a shorter period of time. However, 1½ and 1-hour lessons can be booked. Two hour lessons are not 2 hours of continuous driving, the time is broken up with stops for discussion on progress and introduction of new skills.
Number of lessons: This will vary from pupil to pupil but normally around 40 hours of driving lessons will be necessary to get to test standard. If you maybe lack confidence then learning time can be longer and this is when an instructor with plenty of patience is essential.
Lack confidence: If you maybe lack confidence then learning time can be longer and this is when an instructor with plenty of patience and the skills to develope confidence is essential. I have a lot of success in training learner drivers who lets say, "are on the other side of 30".
Geographical areas covered: Most areas in North, South, and West Edinburgh, and West Lothian. For more details, see the Tuition Areas on the right hand column.
Your first lesson: After learning about the main controls in the car and how to operate them, you will then get to do some driving in a quiet area. Here you will learn and practice how to move off and stop.
Have some existing driving skills and experience? If yes, then you are a “partly-trained” driver and will require fewer lessons to reach test standard. After a short assessment of your driving skills, we will plan a course of lessons that teach you additional skills and correct any driving errors.

Other Driver Training Courses
Driving on the Left (Foreign Licence Holders)
Drivers holding a full EC (European Community) licence can drive in the UK using their current licence. However, driving on the left can sometimes be a challenge.
A short course of lessons is available to help you to adapt to driving on the left.
Motorway Driving
If you have already passed your test, then it is wise to consider a lesson on motorway driving. This will include joining and leaving the motorway, using slip roads, overtaking safely, hazard perception, and dealing with breakdowns.
Minimum time required is one two-hour lesson.
City Centre Driving
The ever-increasing volume of traffic and complexity of road systems can make city centre driving a daunting experience for many people. Boost your confidence with a few lessons where you will learn about greenways, bus lanes, one-way systems, lane discipline, and much more. These are two-hour lessons.
Automatic to Manual
If you passed your test in an automatic car, you have to re sit another practical test if you want to drive a manual car. A short course of lessons is available to teach you how to use the clutch controls and gears.
Short Refresher Courses
Full licence holders sometimes ask for a refresher course for a variety of reasons. They include returning to driving after a gap, getting experience and confidence of town driving, brushing up on roundabouts, polishing up manoeuvres, such as parking, driving in adverse conditions, driving in the dark, or all of the above.
You may only need a one-hour lesson or a short series of lessons.
